Your Path to MCO Contracting

We are thrilled to help you expand your practice to serve Medicaid clients. In New Mexico, Medicaid services are managed through health plans called Managed Care Organizations (MCOs). Getting "MCO contracted" simply means getting approved and in-network with these health plans so you can get reimbursed for your care.

Before Luminar Health can submit your contracting applications, you must have an active NPI, an updated CAQH profile, and a provider YesNM account. Use the step-by-step videos below to set these up, so our team can handle the rest.

3 Steps to Prepare for MCO Contracting

To keep your registrations simple and consistent, use the same email address across your NPI, CAQH, and YesNM profiles. Pick an accessible account you monitor regularly that is completely yours, avoiding school or workplace emails that could be deactivated later. Most importantly, this email address MUST NOT be tied to your YesNM account for personal state benefits (such as SNAP or personal Medicaid), as sharing an address creates account conflicts that halt your application.

Step 1: National Provider Identifier (NPI)

Your NPI is your unique 10-digit identification number used to identify you and process your claims. Your NPI will live on a national, publicly searchable registry that all health insurance plans use to verify providers.

IMPORTANT: The NPI registry is a completely public database, meaning any practice address or phone number you enter can be searched and viewed by anyone online. If you work from home, we strongly recommend keeping your home address private by using a PO Box or renting a mailbox at a store like The UPS Store or PostNet to get a real commercial business address.

Step 2: CAQH

CAQH is the registry that Medicaid health plans check to confirm your identity and credentials for MCO contracting.

IMPORTANT: Keep in mind that insurance plans require you to log back into CAQH every 120 days to confirm your profile is still accurate. Even if nothing has changed, you must still log in, review your information, and re-attest to keep your credentialing active.

Step 3: YesNM

YesNM is the state enrollment portal that officially establishes your provider status with New Mexico Medicaid. Once you create your account, simply add your login credentials to your NuCo Wallet so our team can access your portal and finish setting up your profile.

IMPORTANT: Always register using a DIFFERENT email address from the one linked to any of your personal state benefits (such as SNAP or personal Medicaid). If you use the same email address, the YesNM portal will encounter account conflicts and fail to process your provider enrollment correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an MCO, and why do I need to contract with them? In New Mexico, Medicaid coverage is delivered through health plans known as Managed Care Organizations (MCOs) under the state’s Turquoise Care program. The four MCOs are Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico, Molina Healthcare, Presbyterian Health Plan, and UnitedHealthcare. Becoming "MCO contracted" means you are an approved, in-network provider with these plans, allowing you to bill Medicaid and receive reimbursement for your services.

Can Luminar Health complete my NPI, CAQH, and YesNM registrations for me? Unfortunately, you must create these three accounts yourself, as they establish your official legal identity with state and federal databases. Luminar Health provides video walkthroughs to guide you through every step. For YesNM, you will set up the initial account and add your login to your NuCo Wallet so our team can log in to make sure you have the accurate taxonomy for your provider type, the appropriate documents have been added, and to review the application to avoid denials. Once your YesNM is approved, Luminar Health takes over entirely to submit and manage your MCO contracting applications with the health plans.

Why does YesNM require a different email from my personal state benefits? The YesNM system uses your email address as a unique account identifier. If you register as a healthcare provider using an email already connected to personal benefits (like SNAP, TANF, or personal Medicaid), the state system triggers an account conflict that freezes your provider enrollment. Using a separate, accessible personal email that you check regularly prevents this issue and keeps your application moving without delay.

Why shouldn't I enter my taxonomy codes in YesNM myself? Provider taxonomy codes are specific administrative numbers that define your scope of practice for state Medicaid billing. Entering an incorrect code can cause claims denials or stall your entire enrollment. Setting up your basic account and sharing your login through your NuCo Wallet allows Luminar Health to input the exact taxonomy codes required for your specialty.

Why shouldn’t I use my home address on my NPI registration? The National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) registry is an open, publicly searchable federal database. Any practice address or contact number entered on your NPI profile can be found online by anyone. If you provide care from home or do not have a commercial office, we recommend using a PO Box or a commercial mailbox rental (such as The UPS Store or PostNet) to safeguard your personal residence.

Why do I need to log into CAQH every 120 days to verify my information? To "re-attest" simply means to confirm that your credentials, contact details, and practice information remain correct and current. Insurance plans require providers to review and re-confirm their details every four months. Even if nothing in your practice has changed, logging in and clicking submit to verify your information is mandatory to keep your network contracts and credentialing active.

How long does MCO contracting take once these 3 steps are done? Once your YesNM state application is officially approved and your NPI and CAQH profiles are verified, Luminar Health submits your contracting packages to the four MCOs. Review timelines vary by health plan, but the contracting and credentialing process typically takes between 60 and 120 days. Having your prerequisites completed accurately upfront is the best way to avoid processing delays.
